LION’S MANE MUSHROOMS - Hericium erinaceus

Hericium erinaceus

This native to our forests fruits in the summer on hardwood logs. Oaks, maples and even Ailanthus logs will support the growth of this excellent gourmet mushroom. Lion’s Mane Mushrooms grow well on oaks and are managed very similarly to shiitake.

Lion’s Mane is one of the more exotic-looking mushrooms, yet native to Virginia forests. Lion’s Mane (which also goes by Pom Pom, Bearded Hedgehog, and Monkey’s Face), fruits in the summer on hardwood logs, including Oak, Maple, Walnut and even that pesky opportunist Ailanthus (Tree of Heaven).

Lion’s Mane Mushrooms grow well on oaks and are managed very similarly to shiitake.

Lion’s Mane’s distinctive flavor and texture are reminiscent of seafood, but with a more firm and chewy texture than most other mushrooms. It’s delicious cooked over low heat and is similar to crab or lobster, or scallops.

The spawn run is approximately 12-15 months.

Scientific studies suggest that Lion’s Mane stimulates your body to produce nerve growth factor to help regenerate nerve cells, improve cognitive function, and speed wound healing.

Sawdust spawn is 5 pounds net weight.
Mushroom plug spawn is sold in bags of 100 and, bulk plug spawn in bags of 500.  Modified cheese wax is available for purchase with the bag of 100 plugs.  We mix the wax with mineral oil, so no daubers are necessary!  You can apply with your finger.
